North Carolina Passes Lab Safety Bill
The North Carolina General Assembly recently passed " An Act to Implement Science Safety Measures in the Public Schools". The bill includes measures requiring local boards of education to certify that schools are properly equipped with safety equipment and pre-service teachers are properly educated on safety measures. Free Safety Training
Flinn Scientific is offering free safety training and certification - an incredible free service for middle / secondary preservice and science teachers. Kelly Ryan, author of Science Classroom Safety & the Law, does the legal presentations. There are also specific videos for administrators.

This training is a real opportunity for school systems in this time of economic stress. While this training is not totally inclusive of all science subjects, it would legally stand in a court of law for content covered. Each school still needs a trained and certified chemical hygiene officer to have a deeper knowledge of safety and state specifics. Learn more...

This chemical management system will

allow a school system to determine which chemicals and amounts of the chemical that should be in a K-12 school.
prevent the reordering of hazardous chemicals that require disposal by private hazardous waste companies.
advise school personnel to determine the EPA and DOT waste classifications of chemicals.
MSDS sources are listed for each of the 2400 chemicals.

Founded by respected science educator, Linda M. Stroud, Ph.D., Science & Safety Consulting Services (S&SCS) offers insights and solutions based on 34 years of experience in K-12 schools / university education, over 300 hours of science laboratory safety education and assessment of all the laboratories in over 250 middle and secondary schools. She is a certified Chemical Hygiene Officer by the National Registry of Certified Chemists, (NRCC-CHO) as well as a National Safety Council Certified Bloodborne Pathogen Instructor. Dr Stroud holds certifications as a Manager of Environmental Safety and Health (MESH) and Advanced Safety. The MESH and Advanced Safety Programs are sponsored by the Safety & Health Council of NC, NC Department of Labor and the NC State University Industrial Extension Service. Dr. Stroud also is an OSHA General Industry Outreach Trainer.

School safety is more than guns, knives and intruders. Many areas in our schools pose potential safety issues for staff and students. The safety program must be customized and comprehensive for each school and school system to provide a safe and healthy learning / working environment for all stakeholders. Schools are accountable for over 100 OSHA regulations-many requiring written programs and training for school staff. Written Hazard Communication-29 CFR 1910.1200, Chemical Hygiene-29 CFR 1910.1450, Blood borne Pathogens-29 CFR 1910.1030, and Emergency Action-29 CFR 1910.38 are just the basic required plans of our schools by either federal OSHA or state OSH programs. These plans also require training for school personnel.

S&SCS is available to provide professional development:

Science teachers in elementary, middle and secondary schools
- Safety for school administrators
- Safety for art, CTE labs and aid schools personnel
- Safety for school Chemical Hygiene Officers and Safety Officers.

S&SCS offers the following services for school systems:

Assessment of labs in art, science and CTE courses

A “Customized Comprehensive School Safety Program.”

School systems must build a sustainable safety program. Sustainability ultimately means that school systems must be able to provide continued professional training and updating their school employees. Ultimately, it would be beneficial for school systems to be able to assess their labs and provide their own professional development for their employees. S&SCS has developed a “School Safety Facilitators Course” to enable school systems to build their own sustainable safety programs.

Dr. Stroud has provided safety training programs for schools in Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, North Carolina and South Carolina. Each presentation is carefully research and developed according to the education laws and OSHA regulations unique to each state. S&SCS is available to provide these specialized services for all schools / school systems in the US.
